This morning I was moping about wanting to go on vacation. I haven't been on vacation since our honeymoon other than a Ski family vacation to Hilton Head and even that was before Renee was born. Poor me, I KNOW.
Ski then asked what I wanted to do for my 30th birthday (GASP) and implied a possible short weekend trip somewhere warm.
The mere thought of it had me dancing around the house all day.
And then the stupid dishwasher broke and we went shopping for a new one because we were planning on getting new kitchen appliances in a year or two anyway.
The dishwasher turned into a fridge and the fridge to a range and a microwave.
We know it's crazy, EITHER new appliances or a vacation but I sort of don't care.
Ski basically told me that I have to pick between the two. A range that can boil water in ninety seconds and a dishwasher that doesn't sound like a space ship taking off OR three days in a warm place ALL ALONE with my husband (a thought I almost can't even fathom).
Tough call. I'm going to have to sleep on it.
Maybe if you don't buy the Electrolux appliances you could have both. Miss "I can boil water in 90 seconds." :)

lol @ Davina. I like that you guys go big or go home. Tom would be all 'please show me one up from your cheapest model. THAT much?!'
can I come over and boil some water?
seriously though, tough call. I get super cranky when I don't get to go on vacation. but last winter we decided to get some furniture instead (and I do feel very fortunate to even have the luxury of deciding). we are kind of in a different situation though because we've been to Mexico a few times since we got married, and spent lots of long weekends alone in various big cities. I need that time with him especially since having kids. spending money on that is never a bad thing. the point is just to get away though, not to go to tahiti or anything, so I guess i WOULD try to do both... I'd cut back on the vacation. heck, drop the kids off and stay in freaking Minneapolis for a weekend. then come home and enjoy boiling water. :)

What I would do: Buy the appliances and then ship the kids to Nena for a loooong weekend. Crank up the heat in the house and dance around naked (or in some new, uh, unmentionables) and pretend you're in the islands. You would still get to spend time alone with your husband AND get to boil water in 90 seconds (seriously?). Life is good!

I'm SO with Kim. Vacations- well time away from the same ol, same ol, is much needed in my opinion. How about you just buy the dishwasher, and then still go on a weekend away somewhere? And save the other appliances for another time.

I am the bargain shopper...check out Johnson Mertz up by the mall. They have killer deals and appliances...ick I sound like a commercial. My point...maybe you can have both vacation AND appliances ;)

Save up and get what you really want. It's not like you can buy new appliances everyday. I like the get dishwasher now, vacation and the rest later idea myself.

For the record, I looked at an electrolux range hood that I really liked and the salesperson wouldn't even tell me the price. LOL.

I am the Queen of Practicality, and would totally buy the appliances. As much as I would love a weekend away, there is something about having the day-to-day be made easier that is just too good to pass up.

I think you should attempt to do both - just do a 'staycation' or somewhere within driving distance - you may not get warm but you'll get the 'alone time'. And do not underestimate the mood-improving qualities of new appliances. While some may think it's nuts, I am still deeply in love with my Electrolux range and just seeing it makes me happy. It's that pretty and it does boil water in 90 seconds which is sweet.

like you, i haven't been on a 'real' vacation since before child. i've spent most of my time 'investing' in the house (meaning things like siding, windows, cement, etc.) and have skipped having fun on my dime. having said that, i'd still get the appliances and then ship my kids to the grandparents for the weekend. maybe.
okay, i'm no help. go buy an appliance and then reward yourself for your decision by going on VACATION. :)
